The Deadman Peaks Trail Run is a deceptively hard and surprisingly beautiful high desert race near Cuba, NM. The course is on the Continental Divide Trail through the Rio Puerco Valley. The race is mostly single track with some jeep trails and has it all from sand to rocks and slick rock through rolling terrain with a few interesting hills between 6,350 and 7,400 ft.

Camping
There is free camping available at the Start/Finish line area off Highway 197.
Aid Station
Aid stations are approximately nine miles apart. Ensure you carry enough hydration to reach each station. Support crews or visitors can meet with their runners at the Mesa Portales Aid Station and the Turnaround Aid Station. The maps include the locations:

Weather

Safety
The area can be desolate yet uniquely beautiful, with expansive views of high deserts, badlands, mesas, and volcanic plugs like Cabezon Peak.
Important Gear for Backbone 100-Mile and 53-Mile Course Participants:
- Rain jacket
- Two lighting devices (headlamp/flashlight)
- Hydration vest or water bottle
Drop Bag
- Backbone 100-Milers: Drop bags for 100 milers will be at Mesa Portales and Turnaround Aid Station and must be turned in no later than 5:45 AM. Drop bags will return when the Turnaround Aid Station closes Sunday morning.
- 53-Mile Course: Drop bags for 53 milers will be at Mesa Portales and Turnaround Aid Station and must be turned in no later than 6:30 AM. All bags will be returned no later than 7:00 PM.
- 55K Course: Drop bags for 55K will be at Mesa Portales only and must be turned in by 7:30 AM. All bags will be returned no later than 7:00 PM.
Race & Course Info
To help you navigate the trails and aid stations effectively, we have provided detailed course maps for each event.
Please familiarize yourself with the terrain and important checkpoints.
- Backbone 100-Mile Course Map: This double out-and-back course features approximately 10,000 feet of elevation gain. Ensure you note the locations of the aid stations along the route.
Start Time: 6:00 AM, Saturday
Cut-Off Time: 35 hours (ends Sunday at 5:00 PM)
Pacers: Must check in, sign a waiver, and wear a pacer bib. Available for pickup at the 53-mile Start/Finish line and 79.5 Turnaround Aid Station.
- 53-Mile Course Map: This out-and-back course runs along the Continental Divide Trail, featuring rocky paths and several short climbs.
Start Time: 7:00 AM Cut-Off Time: Midnight at the start/finish line Turnaround Aid Station Cut-Off: 3:00 PM
- 55K Course Map: A scenic route that includes key aid stations and turnaround points.
Start Time: 8:00 AM Cut-Off Time: 10:00 PM
- 18-Mile Course Map: A straightforward route that heads to the Mesa Portales Aid Station before returning to the start/finish line.
Start Time: 9:00 AM Cut-Off Time: 5:00 PM
- 10-Mile Course Map: This course follows the CDT until the second green gate, marked for your turnaround point.
Start Time: 10:00 AM Cut-Off Time: 3:00 PM
